Stuttgart - DaimlerChrysler is raising its commitment to equal opportunity and protection of minorities through strategically aligned Global Diversity Management.

The formation of the Global Diversity Office ensures the implementation of the relevant measures within the company. DaimlerChrysler’s Global Diversity Management ties in with the existing measures and guidelines in the company. The DaimlerChrysler Diversity Statement was adopted at the time of the merger in 1998 as a joint and globally applicable declaration on equal opportunities and the protection of minorities. Accordingly, all employees are deployed, promoted and developed in line with their competencies, abilities and performance, irrespective of their gender, origin, religious or organizational affiliation.

The composition of the global workforce of DaimlerChrysler reflects the diversity of the people who use the company’s products and services. Tapping the individual abilities of each and every employee is a precondition for being able to react quickly to the wide range of customer requirements. The objective of Global Diversity Management is to contribute to the competitiveness and innovative capacity of DaimlerChrysler in global competition.

The reorganization of Diversity Management at DaimlerChrysler includes the formation of a Global Diversity Council comprised of Board of Management members and top managers which determines the alignment of diversity measures in the Group and ensures that the topic is linked with strategy. Divisional Diversity Councils implement the resolutions taken in their divisions and practice diversity policy in the workforce at their locations. A Global Diversity Office set up in the department of the Board Member for Human Resources ensures the strategic alignment of Global Diversity Management and its operational implementation.

The future of a global automotive manufacturer such as DaimlerChrysler is highly dependent on its demonstrated success in recruiting, developing and promoting talent. According to Guenther Fleig, Board Member for Human Resources and Labor Relations Director at DaimlerChrysler, "DaimlerChrysler lives and promotes equal opportunity. By offering equal opportunities, DaimlerChrysler strengthens its position as an attractive employer and intends to attract and retain the best employees for the company. The increased recruitment of women in technical professions, the promotion of women in management, the increased age of the workforce and the ethnic diversity of our global company are key issues with which we are aligning our management processes."

In 2000, DaimlerChrysler in Germany had already presented a joint declaration by Group management and the Group Labor Council on equal opportunities and defined areas for action. The advancement of opportunities for women in the company is a stated objective of corporate management. Approximately 85% of all new vehicle purchases are influenced by women. The increased recruitment of women in technical professions is leading to their more intensive involvement in product development, thus enabling the requirements of female customers to be better addressed. Numerous activities at DaimlerChrysler over the last few years have contributed to the steady rise in the percentage of women in the workforce in Germany to the current level of 12.4%.

In the areas of career and family and work-life balance, DaimlerChrysler supports its employees with a wide range of offers such as flexible working time models and childcare. For this commitment, the company received an award as a family-friendly company in May 2005 from the German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs in conjunction with the forum "Frauen in der Wirtschaft" (Women in Business).

Diversity Management is an integral component of human resources policy at DaimlerChrysler in the USA. The diversity measures of Chrysler Group for example are comprised mainly of guidelines and agreements on issue involving recruitment and employment, protection from harassment and protection from discrimination.

Chrysler Group is one of the leading companies on diversity and integration in the USA. The percentage of women and minorities among

Chrysler Group managers has almost doubled over the last six years, rising to 27%. In 2004 it was again recognized as one of the top 50 companies offering women the best employment and promotion prospects. The Minority Retail Dealer Development Program, developed as early as 1983, which is aimed at meeting the diversity of customer preferences through systematic selection and promotion of highly qualified sales employees from ethnic minority backgrounds, has met with an equally positive response.
